The Guangzhou Gymnasium was completed in 2001 for the 9th National Games in the Guangdong Province of China, and is made up of three buildings that were designed to provide uniform lighting throughout the space while reducing glare for athletes and spectators alike. The immense size of the roofs required that the panels be “stepped”. The ability of the Quadwall® translucent panels to extend continually in large lengths helped minimize the number of horizontal interruptions in the system. The building primarily hosts athletic events but has hosted concerts and competitions as well, seating up to 13,000 visitors. At night, the interior lighting illuminates the translucent roof, creating a unique silhouette against the background of the Baiyun Hills from outside.
